POE study for UK HealthCare

I was a research assistant for a two year collaborative pre- and post-occupancy evaluation (POE) of UK HealthCare’s new cardiovascular unit. A post-occupancy evaluation (POE) is focused on evaluating and measuring the performance of a built environment to understand how to improve future designs and processes for the environment.

The POE included research studies involving questionnaires, focus groups, pedometer studies, behavioral mapping, communication mapping and documentation, nurse time in patient rooms, acoustical measurements, and room usage studies. (Click the link below to view the research studies/infographics)

The use of a pre- and post-occupancy evaluation offered a unique opportunity to engage with UK HealthCare staff, patients, and visitors to better understand how the design of our built environment can impact effective and efficient care. Outcomes allowed the researchers to better understand both positive and negative design attributes of the centralized and decentralized models, and the effect each has on efficiency, communication, teamwork, and staff satisfaction.
